A couple of days ago, Rad noticed that Skittles had a huge bump on the side of his face. Jessica apparently noticed it earlier in the week but didn't say anything to anyone. Oddly, when you see his head in a profile shot, you can't tell. You either had to stand above him or have the view to see the bump.
We took him to the vet Friday and weighed the options. Surgery was pretty spendy but by the time we paid for the visit, to have him put to sleep, disposed of, buy a new bunny in the future, pay to have it 'fixed', it would essentially be a wash. The plus side is we know Skittles, he has a great temperament and Jessica loves him and has been good with his care all along. It turned out he had 2 abscesses, 1 on the bottom and 1 on the side. With a rabbit, they are like rocks so they have to cut them open and scrape it out. Not fun for Skittles.
ETA 10/4/12 - all has gone well and he doesn't have an infection. We now get to put honey in his face to keep the bacteria from growing. Odd, messy and he doesn't like it.
ETA 10/22/12 - Skittles has his stitches out. He goes back in a few months to have his teeth looked at and to discuss the possibility of having them filed so this doesn't happen again.
